Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi and Singaporean foreign minister Vivian Balakrishnan met in Beijing on Tuesday, marking a high-profile moment in Asia’s diplomatic calendar.
Wang, who sits on the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, noted President Xi Jinping’s recent meeting with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and praised Singapore’s reaffirmation of the one-China policy and its unequivocal stance against "Taiwan independence."
The meeting coincides with the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Singapore. Wang underscored the opportunity to turn shared commitments into real action by deepening cooperation across trade, investment, technology and connectivity.
Balakrishnan emphasized Singapore’s forward-looking and strategic vision, highlighting plans to harness emerging technologies and strengthen economic and trade ties. He also reiterated Singapore’s support—alongside ASEAN members—for openness, inclusivity and global multilateralism.
Through these talks, both sides aim to launch new initiatives in tech innovation, trade partnerships and regional collaboration, signaling a fresh chapter in China-Singapore relations that could shape business, policy and cultural exchange across Asia and beyond.
