New Film ‘Story of Cotton Field’ Showcases Xinjiang’s Cotton Cultivation Saga

Story of Cotton Field, adapted from an award-winning novel, hits Chinese theaters on June 21. The film highlights decades of dedication that fueled the Xinjiang region's cotton cultivation.

At the film's premiere, director Zhang Zhong expressed pride in directing such a historically and culturally significant story. Filming began in September 2023 and spanned 70 days across Qitai, Mulei and Aksu in Xinjiang, plus scenes in Shanghai and Fujian. This cross-regional effort is already hailed as a benchmark for cultural collaboration.

The narrative centers on perseverance: aid cadres and local communities transforming arid land into productive cotton fields. Veteran actor Li Xuejian stars as an older-generation aid cadre, delivering a heartfelt performance that captures the deep connections formed when Xinjiang became a second home for many.

For young global citizens, thought leaders and travelers alike, Story of Cotton Field offers a human story of passion and partnership driving regional growth. It's a testament to how shared dedication and cultural exchange can shape real-world development.
