Chengdu Debuts Smart Robots in Citywide Real-World Tests

Chengdu, a major tech hub in the Chinese mainland, has kicked off a citywide real-world validation program for smart robots. Organized by the Chengdu Robot Industry Association, this initiative deploys innovations from 10 domestic firms across education, tourism, public security, traffic management and safety guidance scenarios.

"Chengdu opens real-world scenarios to cultivate practical smart robots, forging an innovation highland for the industry," said Li Junjie, the association's secretary-general. The program also invites global enterprises to test robots on local streets, schools and scenic spots, refining human-centric services in a live environment.

On-Campus Safety and Interaction

At Chengdu Paotongshu Primary School, students met two robot types. The wheeled-biped robot "Xiao Zha" from Chengdu Humanoid Robot Innovation Center delivered morning greetings and safety tips, while TD Tech's quadruped patrolled corridors with autonomous navigation, boosting campus security.

Tourist Experiences Get a Tech Upgrade

Along the downtown Jinli Pedestrian Street, INMO Technology's AR glasses offered real-time translation for international visitors. Near the Wuhou Shrine, a holographic guide helped plan interactive routes, complemented by AI screens offering multilingual support.

Robots on Duty in Urban Management

Ultra Magnus, a bipedal traffic officer by Chengdu APLUX Intelligence Technology Co. Ltd., directed vehicles at a bustling business district, while robotic dogs patrolled Tianfu Square, showcasing how agile machines can support public security.

Fueling an AI Powerhouse

This push is part of Chengdu's broader strategy: in March, the city outlined 22 healthcare robot scenarios, and in June released police task lists for patrol and traffic bots. "Scenarios as key drivers of innovation," said Yin Ximing, researcher at the Beijing Institute of Technology.

Chengdu's AI sector topped 100 billion yuan in core industry scale in 2024 and aims for 130 billion yuan by 2025, targeting 30% annual growth. By opening its streets and schools, the city hopes to cement its status as a national hub for AI and smart robotics.
