At the 17th Straits Forum in Xiamen, a coastal city in Fujian Province on the Chinese mainland, political adviser Wang Huning laid out a vision for stronger unity and peaceful development across the Taiwan Strait. Emphasizing shared history and cultural bonds, he framed national rejuvenation as an opportunity for all.
Wang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, called on compatriots across the Taiwan Strait to enhance their sense of identity with the Chinese nation. He urged everyone to protect cultural heritage and work together to safeguard peace.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as Taiwan’s recovery. Wang said these milestones are shared memories that underscore common roots and the importance of preserving the fruits of victory.
Reaffirming the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, he stressed opposition to “Taiwan independence” separatist activities and external interference. Wang underscored that both sides belong to one China and must jointly maintain peace and stability.
Addressing future generations, Wang pledged continued support for residents of Taiwan, promising real benefits—especially for young people—to bolster their sense of fulfillment, happiness, and belonging. “We stand firmly as strong supporters of our Taiwan compatriots,” he said, encouraging youth to take pride in their Chinese heritage and contribute to national rejuvenation.
Former Kuomintang Chairperson Ma Ying-jeou also addressed the forum, highlighting peaceful development as the shared aspiration of people across the Taiwan Strait. He called for deeper exchanges under the common political foundation of the 1992 Consensus and opposition to Taiwan independence.
This year’s forum drew over 7,000 residents of Taiwan from diverse sectors, reflecting growing interest in cross-strait integration and people-to-people ties. As the 17th edition unfolds, the Straits Forum continues to build bridges, foster dialogue, and shape a cooperative future.
