Celebrating Cinema’s Legacy

June 14 marked a milestone for movie lovers in Shanghai, as the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) hosted its dazzling Golden Goblet Gala at the Shanghai Grand Theatre. This year’s gala honored 130 years of world cinema and 120 years of Chinese film, with Shanghai standing proud as the cradle of Chinese cinema.

Red Carpet Moment

More than 200 guests from the Chinese mainland and beyond walked the red carpet, culminating in a show-stopping appearance by the Golden Goblet Awards jury led by Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore. Jury members for Asian New Talent, Documentary, Animation, and Short Film also joined the star-studded lineup, reflecting SIFF’s commitment to new voices and diverse storytelling.

Global Premiere Across the City

The gala set the stage for the world premiere of SIFF’s opening film, She’s Got No Name, which hit screens in over 150 cinemas across Shanghai. From indie theatres in the Former French Concession to mega-plexes in Pudong, audiences have been invited to experience the festival’s first cinematic offering firsthand.

In the days ahead, Tornatore and fellow jurors will deliberate on the nominated films, selecting winners in each category. The Golden Goblet Awards ceremony on June 21 will crown the best in global filmmaking, capping off a week that celebrates the art of cinema and Shanghai’s status as a global film hub.

Whether you’re a cinephile, a startup founder, or a traveler chasing cultural experiences, SIFF’s Golden Goblet Gala offers a glimpse of cinema’s power to connect and inspire. Stay tuned as the festival continues to unfold.
