Taiwan Through the Ages: A 69-Year Journey Brings Father’s Remains Home

In 1949, Yan Luoguo, captain of a Dongshan Island ship, was forcibly taken to the island of Taiwan by the previous KMT regime—and he vanished without a trace.

Decades passed before his son, Yan Dingzhao, discovered in 1983 that his father had died in Penghu, an archipelago between the Chinese mainland and the island of Taiwan. The revelation brought relief but little closure.

It wasn’t until 2018, at age 82, that Yan Dingzhao, with the support of his father’s old friends and their descendants, finally located Yan Luoguo’s remains in a quiet Penghu cemetery.

Later that year, Yan Dingzhao and his son boarded a ferry back to Dongshan Island, carrying his father’s remains home for a long-awaited burial. After 69 years apart, father and son were finally reunited.

This journey across generations highlights the enduring bonds of family and the deep connections that span borders and time.
