Under the Riviera sun, Nice has become the epicenter of global ocean talks. The third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) kicked off here with a clear message: our oceans need united action now.
Mayor Christian Estrosi, whose city is hosting UNOC3, emphasized one partnership above all: “France and China, both staunch advocates of multilateralism, have a key role to play in the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans.”
According to France's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, nearly 100 countries are participating, a significant jump from the gatherings in New York and Lisbon. Beyond diplomats, this conference attracts a robust contingent of scientists, civil society leaders and international stakeholders—each bringing fresh ideas to the table.
Over the next few days, sessions will explore ways to share research, harness technology and craft joint policies that preserve marine biodiversity and support sustainable blue economies. With momentum building in Nice, all eyes are on what France and China can achieve together—and how their cooperation could chart a new course for ocean governance worldwide.
