Chinese Mainland Urges US to Handle Taiwan Question Prudently

In a regular press conference on Wednesday, the Chinese mainland urged the United States to handle the Taiwan question with utmost prudence, warning that this issue sits at the 'very core of China's core interests.'

Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, reiterated that respecting the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques is non-negotiable. 'This is the foremost red line that must not be crossed in China-U.S. relations,' she said.

Zhu called on the U.S. to stop sending the wrong signals to separatist forces and to prevent a small handful of extremists from undermining broader diplomatic ties. She also condemned Taiwan authorities from the Democratic Progressive Party and separatist forces for clinging to 'Taiwan independence' positions and collaborating with external actors in provocative attempts to seek independence.

'These are the root causes of tensions and instability across the Taiwan Strait,' Zhu added, underscoring the need for responsible handling of cross-strait ties and international engagement on the issue.

As the U.S. continues to engage with the Taiwan region, analysts say that policymakers will be watching closely to see whether Washington upholds the one-China principle and avoids actions that could inflame tensions.

With cross-strait relations at a critical juncture, the call for prudence reflects broader concerns over regional stability and the future of diplomatic cooperation in the Asia-Pacific.
