Heavy Rains in Yunnan Province Trigger Landslides and Evacuations

Since last week, torrential rains have hammered southwest China’s Yunnan Province, triggering landslides, house collapses and road closures that have disrupted daily life for thousands.

In Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture, 5,885 residents from 1,652 households have been affected. The storm damaged 27 houses, destroyed or damaged 16 bridges and blocked roads at 97 locations. A popular scenic area and a sightseeing platform were temporarily closed as authorities rushed to safeguard the region.

So far, 1,797 people have been relocated in Nujiang, and authorities report no casualties.

Further north in Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, landslides, mudslides and flash floods have blocked multiple roads, while dense fog has complicated rescue efforts. In the Meri Snow Mountain scenic zone, flash floods forced the evacuation of 300 tourists before the area was closed to visitors.

Local transport teams are deploying heavy machinery to clear debris and repair road links, and Deqen County fire crews have rescued 138 residents and relocated another 331 to safety.

Meteorological services warn that more rain is expected in the coming days, keeping the risk of landslides, mudflows and flash floods high. Residents and travelers are advised to stay alert and follow local guidance.
