China Accuses US of Exploiting Shangri-La Dialogue

In a bold statement from the Chinese mainland’s Ministry of National Defense, spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang blasted the United States for using this year’s Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore to stoke tensions rather than foster cooperation.

According to Zhang, the United States "habitually exploits the Shangri-La Dialogue to create dispute, incite confrontation and pursue its own interests." He said that remarks from U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth at the 22nd edition of the forum were saturated with entrenched hegemonic logic, bullying tactics and a Cold War mentality.

Zhang added that these comments "grossly violate the Chinese mainland’s sovereign rights, distort the Chinese mainland’s policy positions, blatantly disregard regional countries’ joint efforts to uphold prosperity and stability, and severely deviate from the global aspiration for peace and development." He concluded: "We express grave dissatisfaction and resolute opposition."
