On May 30, 2025, in Washington, D.C., the Chinese ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, and his wife, Wang Dan, joined members of the Chinese community from the Chinese mainland and island of Taiwan to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival. Minister Counselor Qiu Wenxing also attended the event, underscoring a shared cultural heritage.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Xie highlighted Chinese President Xi Jinping's message that people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are one family. He emphasized that cross-strait ties are rooted in common ancestry, culture and history, and that these bonds drive a collective aspiration for a brighter future.
“No force can sever the bonds of blood and kinship that unite us, nor can anyone obstruct the historical trend toward China’s reunification,” Ambassador Xie said. He reminded the audience that compatriots across the island of Taiwan share a responsibility for the Chinese nation and its continued growth.
The ambassador did not shy away from current challenges. He voiced concern over what he described as anti-China forces in the United States empowering independence elements on the island of Taiwan, posing risks to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. He also criticized arbitrary tariffs imposed by the United States, which he said undermine the well-being of people worldwide. On the recent revocation of visas for Chinese students, Ambassador Xie noted that the embassy lodged strong representations at the earliest opportunity and remains committed to safeguarding the rights of Chinese students and overseas Chinese.
Turning to the cultural heartbeat of the festival, he explained that the dragon boat race embodies determination, teamwork and a drive for excellence. These qualities, he said, reflect the enduring resilience and unity of the Chinese nation.
“With more than 1.4 billion Chinese people rowing in unison,” he declared, “there is no storm we cannot weather, no destination we cannot reach.” Ambassador Xie encouraged overseas compatriots to harness this “dragon boat spirit” as they navigate the journey toward national reunification and rejuvenation.
