Rail Travel Surges as Dragon Boat Festival Holiday Kicks Off

As the Dragon Boat Festival holiday kicked off on Saturday, the Chinese mainland's railway network is expected to handle 17.8 million passenger trips, marking a significant rise in holiday travel.

On Friday, over 15.78 million travelers passed through stations, with China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. reporting smooth, safe operations ahead of the long weekend. To ease crowding, 1,029 additional trains are scheduled for Saturday.

Major hubs — Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Nanjing and Zhengzhou — rank among the top destinations as young global citizens and digital nomads blend culture and commerce, seeking both city thrills and heritage experiences.

Railway authorities nationwide are boosting capacity, enhancing station services and introducing cultural activities — such as folk performances and local craft showcases — to enrich passenger journeys and spotlight regional traditions.

Over the five-day travel rush, the network anticipates around 80.5 million passenger trips, reflecting a broader trend of festival mobility surges. For many, the Dragon Boat Festival remains a time to reconnect with family roots, explore new cities and celebrate shared heritage.
