The Traditional Chinese Dragon Boat Race got underway on Friday in Tongren, southwest China’s Guizhou Province, one day ahead of the annual Dragon Boat Festival.
A total of 60 teams from around the country made the trip to Tongren, competing in four events – men’s and women’s traditional style and men’s and women’s freestyle. Each race covers a straight 500 meters, challenging crews to power through to the finish line.
After the preliminary heats, 24 teams (40% of the field) advanced to Saturday’s semifinals. The championship finals are set for later in the day, promising another round of intense boat racing.
