China, APRC Launch IOMed for Asian Peace in Hong Kong

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Surakiart Sathirathai, chairman of the Asian Peace and Reconciliation Council (APRC) and former Thai deputy prime minister, in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) on Thursday to witness the signing ceremony of the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed).

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, described IOMed as a groundbreaking platform that offers voluntary, multilateral pathways for resolving disputes and honoring the spirit of the United Nations Charter.

He stressed that China is ready to collaborate with fellow Asian nations through established regional frameworks—China-ASEAN, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation and the Asia Cooperation Dialogue—to protect and advance peace and stability across the region.

Surakiart welcomed the invitation to Hong Kong SAR and praised the timely launch of IOMed amid current international challenges. He added that the APRC is eager to work alongside Chinese counterparts to drive peace and development in Asia.

As IOMed takes shape, stakeholders across the region will be watching how this new body shapes the future of diplomacy and conflict resolution in Asia.
