China Edges Saudi Arabia 2-1 in Thrilling U16 Opener

Hohhot came alive on Wednesday as the Chinese mainland's U16 side kicked off the CFA Team China International Tournament with a 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia. In a match that showcased youthful flair and late drama, the hosts secured a thrilling win at Hohhot Sports Center Stadium.

The opening minutes set the tone: crisp passing and aggressive runs saw the Chinese mainland team probing Saudi Arabia's defense. A slick move in the fourth minute sliced through the box but fizzled out just before hitting the net.

Persistence paid off in the 12th minute. Keeper Xu Zengfu launched a precise long ball that Kuang Zhaolei met with a powerful header. The ball fell to He Saifan, who drove into the danger zone before delicately chipping the goalkeeper to make it 1-0.

Saudi Arabia pushed back after the break, ramping up the pressure. Their persistence bore fruit in the 68th minute when Nawaf Abdullah pounced on a loose ball in the box, slotting home an equalizer that leveled the score at 1-1.

Needing a spark, the Chinese mainland side dialed up the intensity. Wave after wave of attacks finally broke through during stoppage time. In the 91st minute, winger Xie Jin whipped in a teasing cross from the right flank. Youth star Shuai Weihao rose above the defense to head home the decisive goal, sealing a 2-1 win that sent the home crowd into a frenzy.

With confidence high, the hosts now turn their attention to Friday's clash against Vietnam. As the tournament unfolds, this young Chinese mainland squad will look to build momentum and stake their claim for the trophy.
