Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) Secretary of Foreign Affairs Lorin S. Robert in Xiamen on Thursday, marking a new chapter in the China-FSM comprehensive strategic partnership. Robert is in China for the Third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers' Meeting.
Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, noted that with concerted efforts by the FSM and other participating countries, the meeting produced a joint statement injecting fresh momentum into relations between China and Pacific Island nations. He emphasized that steady progress since diplomatic ties began has delivered tangible benefits to FSM residents.
The Chinese side praised the FSM Congress for passing a resolution reaffirming its commitment to the one-China principle and expressed confidence that the FSM will continue to support China's position on the Taiwan question.
Highlighting the handover of the China-assisted FSM National Convention Center as a milestone under the Belt and Road framework, Wang proposed expanding collaboration in infrastructure, climate change response, and marine scientific research. He also urged deeper exchanges in education, youth initiatives, and local governance.
As both sides commit to these priorities, China and the Federated States of Micronesia are poised to chart new pathways for sustainable growth and regional resilience in the Pacific.
