In Xiamen, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Kiribati's President and Foreign Minister Taneti Maamau on the sidelines of the third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. Wang Yi emphasized that China and Kiribati have built strong political mutual trust and launched projects that boost local well-being since resuming diplomatic ties five years ago.
Wang Yi said the decision to restore relations has proven fully aligned with the fundamental interests of both peoples, praising Kiribati’s firm adherence to the one-China principle. He noted that the Chinese Embassy was the first among foreign missions to offer visa services in Kiribati, and Chinese medical teams have helped address critical healthcare shortages on the islands.
Looking ahead, China will continue encouraging reputable and capable Chinese enterprises to invest in Kiribati. Under the Blue Partnership framework, both sides aim to protect and develop marine resources for sustainable growth.
Wang Yi also highlighted China's commitment to climate action in partnership with Pacific Island Countries, including Kiribati. He pledged to use South-South cooperation to help Kiribati build climate resilience while urging developed economies to fulfill their historical responsibilities with increased financial and technological support.
President Maamau thanked China for its strong support in areas ranging from infrastructure and the blue economy to cultural exchanges and healthcare. Both leaders expressed confidence in the success of the meeting and a shared vision for deeper cooperation that drives real-world impact for Kiribati people.
