In Kuala Lumpur on May 27, leaders from ASEAN, the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf and China came together for a summit that could reshape regional cooperation across three dynamic regions.
Built on centuries-old ties and modern economic links, the joint statement outlines a vision anchored in five pillars:
- Economic Integration: Emphasizing the central role of the WTO-backed rules-based trading system, the partners pledged to fast-track free trade accord negotiations, deepen supply chain resilience and explore a regional business council to boost cross-border investment.
- Connectivity: From high-quality Belt and Road corridors to sustainable infrastructure and maritime safety, the summit highlighted seamless logistics and digital platforms as engines of growth.
- Energy Security & Sustainability: Agreeing on an inclusive energy transition under the Paris Agreement, the parties will collaborate on renewable technologiesāfrom green hydrogen to carbon captureāand strengthen supply chains for critical minerals.
- Digital Transformation: The statement calls for a cross-regional framework to advance e-commerce, fintech, AI and digital literacy, ensuring inclusive participation in the digital age.
- Food, Agriculture & People-to-People Ties: From sustainable farming and halal food standards to student exchanges and cultural programs, the pact aims to deepen connections across societies.
Amid rising global tensions, the summit also took a clear stand on the Middle East conflict, condemning attacks on civilians, urging a durable ceasefire in Gaza, and backing a two-state solution based on pre-1967 borders in line with international law.
With a firm call to strengthen multilateralism and uphold ASEAN centrality, the joint statement paints a future where Asia-Pacific and Middle Eastern nations build a more resilient, inclusive and sustainable world economy together.
