In a compelling call for unity, China’s top political advisor Wang Huning on Tuesday urged joint efforts across the Taiwan Strait to promote the rich tapestry of Chinese culture. Meeting with guests from the Taiwan region attending the second Cross-Strait Chinese Culture Summit in Beijing, Wang underscored culture as the “root and soul” of people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
As chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, Wang highlighted the need to uphold cultural confidence, carry forward the spirit of Chinese culture, and work together for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
“We must promote Chinese cultural exchanges, enhance cross-strait cooperation across all sectors, and foster deeper spiritual alignment between compatriots on both sides,” he said. Wang also stressed the importance of patriotism and called on participants to anchor the national spirit with patriotism at its core.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as Taiwan’s recovery. Wang urged all parties to adhere to the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, and to resolutely oppose “Taiwan independence” in order to stand firm on Chinese culture and meet external challenges together.
Guests from Taiwan region, including former Kuomintang chairperson Hung Hsiu-chu, expressed pride in Chinese culture and unwavering confidence in its heritage. They voiced support for upholding the one-China principle, strengthening cultural exchanges, and advancing national reunification and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
