China Launches First Medical Outreach on Tonga’s Eua Island

In a landmark initiative, the fifth batch of the Chinese medical team in Tonga completed a weeklong outreach at Niu'eiki Hospital on Tonga's Eua Island, marking the first time such services reached this remote community.

From gynecology to psychiatry, six specialists from Liaocheng People's Hospital in Shandong Province offered joint ward rounds, outpatient consultations, telemedicine sessions and medical advice. Beyond the hospital walls, the team carried out health checkups, home visits, free medicine distribution and health education campaigns in local villages—spreading the message that early detection saves lives.

'We treated over 300 patients and provided free health examinations for more than 200 residents,' said Lu Qingyang, team leader. 'By identifying and addressing obesity, hypertension and diabetes, we developed targeted treatment plans that earned wide praise across Eua Island.'

In response to the region’s high rates of dermatological and orthopedic conditions, the specialists delivered tailored diagnosis and treatment services, strengthening local capacity and trust. Telemedicine also bridged geographic gaps, connecting remote clinics with experts on the Chinese mainland in real time.

Beyond immediate care, this outreach underscores a growing model of sustainable health partnerships in the Pacific. As Tonga’s residents gain access to quality services and preventive care, the mission sets a new chapter in China-Tonga cooperation—one that may inspire similar efforts across island nations worldwide.
