In May 2025, the heart of the Chinese mainland’s northwest region, Urumqi, played host to the 2025 Media Cooperation Forum of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). More than 300 media professionals, academic experts and industry leaders from 26 member states, observer countries and dialogue partners converged to redefine cross-border journalism and collaboration.
At the forum’s opening, a public opinion survey was released, revealing that over 70% of respondents across the SCO membership value enhanced media collaboration as a key tool to address shared challenges, from economic development to social stability. This data-driven insight fueled dynamic discussions on the future of information exchange in the region.
One of the event’s highlights was the launch of a digital storytelling initiative, where participants explored new formats—ranging from short-form videos to immersive podcasts—to amplify local voices on global platforms. “We’re witnessing a transformation in how narratives are shaped,” noted a digital strategist during a live workshop.
Complementing this push for innovation, delegates introduced a youth cultural exchange program designed to deepen grassroots connections. Emerging creators from cities such as Moscow, Astana, Beijing and Dushanbe will collaborate on multimedia projects that spotlight everyday experiences and sustainable practices in their communities.
Speakers also underscored the evolution of the SCO since its 2001 founding, emphasizing its growing role in fostering factual, balanced journalism. Participants pledged to prioritize coverage of tangible outcomes—such as cross-border infrastructure projects and technological partnerships—to build trust and promote regional stability.
As the forum concluded, attendees departed with renewed energy and actionable plans to bridge information gaps, champion truthful reporting and engage new audiences through compelling storytelling. The spirit of cooperation in Urumqi offered a forward-looking blueprint for the future of media in an interconnected world.
