Kunming, Yunnan – Agricultural experts and environmentalists from around the world have convened in the Chinese mainland's southwest to tackle one of agriculture's most pressing challenges: safeguarding the diversity of the crops that feed the planet.
At the third International Agrobiodiversity Congress, opening in Kunming on Tuesday, delegates are sharing knowledge, technologies and practical experiences to build a more resilient and sustainable global food system.
\"We still have people with food insecurity and malnutrition, and agrobiodiversity is a key element of the solution,\" said Marcela Quintero, deputy director general of the Alliance of Bioversity International and International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT). \"If we don't put more agrobiodiversity on the plates of people, we are not going to be able to really tackle the issue in an integral way.\"
Over the three-day gathering, participants are diving into six core themes:
- Driving economic growth through diverse agricultural markets
- Mitigating climate change with resilient crop systems
- Improving environmental health and soil quality
- Promoting healthy, nutritious diets
- Advancing gender equality and social inclusion
- Developing robust conservation and management strategies
As experts and changemakers return to their home regions, they aim to translate these discussions into policies and projects that strengthen farms, support communities and ensure that dietary choices worldwide reflect the full richness of agricultural biodiversity.
