When Akul Malik, an Indian student at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, first discovered kung fu through an Indian monk trained in China, he saw it as a new way to stay fit. But nothing prepared him for the full experience at Fawang Temple in the Chinese mainland's Henan Province.
A Leap Beyond the Gym
In summer 2024, Akul spent two transformative months under Master Miaodu. Daily routines of horse stance drills and traditional forms pushed him beyond physical limits, building endurance and mental resilience.
Physical Meets Philosophical
Akul notes that gym workouts shape your physique, but kung fu works from the inside out, teaching internal strength (qi), mindfulness, and a rich philosophical tradition in every movement.
Cultural Threads and Shared Heritage
As Akul trained, he saw parallels between Indian and Chinese traditions. Both cultures share Buddhist roots, and India's ancient martial art Kalaripayattu echoes kung fu's holistic approach to body and spirit.
Lessons for Life
Back in Shanghai, Akul carries with him the temple's teachings: discipline, gratitude, and a deeper appreciation for cultural connectivity. His kung fu journey shows how a student can bridge nations through tradition and perseverance.
