Global Interest in Chinese Social Sciences Platform Jumps 34%
Young scholars, tech-savvy professionals, and policy thinkers worldwide are tapping into the National Center for Philosophy and Social Sciences Documentation (NCPSSD) like never before. According to a recent symposium on high-quality development of academic journals, annual visits from overseas users grew 34.2% in 2024 compared to last year.
Hosted by the Library of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the NCPSSD in Beijing, Chinese mainland, the event unveiled the 2024 Report on the Most Popular Journals and the inaugural 2024 User Usage Analysis Report. Together, these studies paint a clear picture: Chinese social sciences research is making waves far beyond its borders.
Among the top draws for international readers were Qiushi—the official publication of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China—alongside journals like Religious Studies and Research in Education Development. Archaeology and Jiangsu Higher Education also earned high marks, highlighting a diverse appetite for insights across humanities and social sciences.
Since its first popularity report in 2018, the NCPSSD has aimed to strengthen the global presence of Chinese academic journals and foster an independent knowledge system. This year’s user analysis dives deeper, tracking engagement across domestic institutions, overseas research centers, and new media platforms to reveal evolving reading patterns.
Today, the NCPSSD stands as the world’s largest open-access portal for Chinese-language philosophy and social sciences research. With over 27 million data records, it serves more than 90,000 domestic institutions and 1,300 overseas partners, while over eight million registered users from 197 countries and regions have clocked 1.6 billion cumulative visits.
Looking ahead, the symposium’s second day focuses on how artificial intelligence can supercharge academic publishing. More than 80 editorial board representatives will debate AI’s benefits and ethical considerations, culminating in a proposal for responsible AI use in journals.
As digital diplomacy and data-driven research become inseparable, the NCPSSD’s rising global engagement signals a new era of scholarly exchange. For students, entrepreneurs, and changemakers, it’s proof that knowledge knows no borders.
