Xi’s Visit to Russia Strengthens Ties and Multilateral Consensus

In late May, President Xi Jinping embarked on a high-stakes state visit to Russia, joining celebrations of the Soviet Union’s 80th Great Patriotic War victory.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called the trip a “complete success,” highlighting how it consolidated the “comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era” between Beijing and Moscow.

The visit’s centerpiece was a landmark joint declaration that charted a new strategic direction for bilateral cooperation. Both sides pledged to treat each other as priority partners, support mutual development, and jointly resist hegemony and coercion.

“This statement provides new strategic direction for the next phase of bilateral relations,” Wang said, stressing that enduring China-Russia ties rest on strong strategic guidance from President Xi and President Putin.

Beyond bilateral gains, Wang noted the visit built broad international consensus on defending multilateralism and preserving the post-war global order. In an era of rising tensions, Beijing and Moscow cast themselves as champions of a multipolar world.

As global power dynamics shift, the Xi-Putin summit underlines the growing influence of this partnership—and its potential to shape future stability on the world stage.
