China Warns Philippines Over South China Sea Drills

Tensions in the South China Sea flared this week when China's Shandong aircraft carrier task group was spotted north of the Philippines during a Philippine–U.S. joint exercise. The appearance near the archipelago's waters and rumors of drills involving Philippine and Taiwan troops caught Manila's attention and drew swift comments from Beijing.

At a Thursday press conference, Zhang Xiaogang, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, issued a stern warning to the Philippines. He accused “certain individuals” in Manila of colluding with external forces, such as the United States, to “stir up the sea” for selfish gains and to “play with fire” on the Taiwan question.

Zhang stressed that the Shandong carrier group was on its annual training mission “in accordance with international law and common practice” and was not targeting any specific country or entity. “We sternly warn the Philippine side to cease its infringements and provocations, and stop offending China's core interest in any form,” he said.

The spokesperson added that China will continue to defend its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests with “resolute and forceful measures.”
