Xi Jinping Calls for Unity and Fairness Ahead of Russia Visit

Chinese President Xi Jinping has published a signed article in the Russian Gazette titled “Learning from History to Build Together a Brighter Future” ahead of his state visit to Russia. The piece commemorates the 80th anniversary of both the Soviet Union's Great Patriotic War victory and the founding of the UN, underscoring the deep bonds formed in shared struggle.

Recalling his visit for the 70th anniversary a decade ago, Xi described meeting veterans whose determination left a lasting impression. Many of these heroes, like General M. Gareyev and Major General T. Shchudlo, have since passed away, but their legacy lives on.

Xi highlights how Chinese and Russian forces fought shoulder to shoulder against fascist powers. He pays tribute to the Soviet Volunteer Group that joined China’s resistance in Nanjing, Wuhan and Chongqing, and to intelligence agent Yan Baohang, whose reports aided the Soviet war effort. A joint supply line across the Gobi Desert became a vital lifeline in the conflict.

The article argues that today’s world faces new tests of unity versus division. Xi calls on nations to uphold the UN Charter, defend multilateralism and reject coercion. He proposes the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative and Global Civilization Initiative to steer global governance toward fairness and shared prosperity.

Addressing the 80th anniversary of the restoration of the island of Taiwan, Xi reaffirms that the Cairo Declaration, Potsdam Proclamation and UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 confirm China’s sovereignty over the island. He praises Russia for adhering to the one-China principle and supporting China’s measures toward reunification.

Looking ahead to the Victory Day celebrations, Xi stresses that China–Russia ties are a constructive force not directed against any third party. He champions dialogue over confrontation and win-win cooperation over zero-sum games, calling their partnership a pillar for a multipolar world and a community with a shared future for mankind.

As Xi Jinping joins Russia to honor this historic milestone, his message is clear: learning from history is key to forging a brighter, more cooperative future on the global stage.
