In a vibrant display of cultural diplomacy, European stage icons Maya Hakvoort and Mate Kamaras lit up Beijing’s Tianqiao Performing Arts Center on April 22, 2025. Their concert celebrated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the Chinese mainland and the European Union.
Maya, celebrated worldwide for her portrayal as 'Elisabeth', and Mate, renowned for his portrayal as 'Death', delivered breathtaking duets from the classic musical 'Elisabeth'. They then surprised the audience with a medley of hits from other beloved musicals, blending West End flair with local enthusiasm.
'Performing here feels like we’re building a bridge,' said Hakvoort. 'Music transcends language, and tonight it highlighted how far our friendship has come.'
'Being part of this milestone shows the power of the arts in shaping global connections,' added Kamaras.
The sold-out concert drew a diverse crowd of fans, diplomats, and young creatives — all united by a shared passion for live theater. As Maya and Mate took their final bow, applause reverberated long after the last note, a fitting tribute to five decades of harmony between the Chinese mainland and the EU.
