As China and the European Economic Community formally established diplomatic ties on May 6, 1975, at the height of the Cold War, both sides sought to diversify their international partnerships. "China and Europe are two major forces advancing multipolarity, two big markets supporting globalization and two great civilizations advocating diversity," said the head of the Chinese Mission to the European Union during last November's China-EU Forum in Brussels.
Over five decades, bilateral trade has soared from $2.4 billion to nearly $786 billion today – a 300-fold leap. This explosive growth is fueled by waves of cooperation in areas ranging from green energy and digital innovation to sustainable infrastructure and cultural exchanges.
On the economic front, European companies have tapped into the vast opportunities of the Chinese mainland, while Chinese firms have invested across EU member states, fostering job creation and technology transfer. Meanwhile, collaborative research initiatives have advanced breakthroughs in electric vehicles, 5G networks and renewable energy.
Beyond trade, the China-EU partnership has expanded to include climate action, where both sides pledged to reach carbon neutrality by mid-century. Joint efforts on biodiversity, circular economy and social innovation underscore a growing alignment on sustainability goals.
As they mark this 50-year milestone, younger generations on both sides are embracing people-to-people exchanges – from academic scholarships and cultural festivals to city twinning and low-carbon travel programs. Digital platforms and e-sports tournaments are forging new bonds among youth, reflecting a shared passion for technology and creativity.
Looking ahead, the China-EU duo aims to deepen strategic dialogue and enhance global governance. With an eye on a more interconnected, resilient world, they seek to spearhead multilateral solutions to challenges like pandemics, cyber threats and economic inequality.
Half a century on, the China-EU journey shows how two global players can build a partnership rooted in trust, innovation and diversity – charting a path for a more balanced and inclusive global order.
