China’s Ambassador Urges Respectful U.S. Trade Talks After Tariff Hikes

At an open house showcasing Gansu Province, China's Ambassador to the U.S., Xie Feng, urged Washington to approach trade talks with equality, respect and reciprocity after recent tariff hikes.

He warned that walls between economies hurt everyone. Americans enjoy affordable goods and lead in finance, tech and services thanks to global trade, Xie said, adding that the U.S. has gained more than it has lost.

On trade imbalances, he noted that U.S.-owned enterprises in China generated over $400 billion more in sales revenue than Chinese firms in the U.S. in 2022, underlining that the China-U.S. economic relationship is balanced and mutually beneficial.

China, the world's second-largest consumer market with the largest middle-income population, remains committed to steady growth and openness. Despite global headwinds, its GDP grew 5.4% in the first quarter, and exports rose 6.9%, Xie said.

He also highlighted booming travel: last year saw 64.88 million foreign visits, up 82.9%, and during the five-day May Day holiday, inbound tourism bookings jumped 173%. Visa-free transit and instant tax refunds are drawing more global visitors.

In Xie's view, defending legitimate rights and the order of international trade means standing firm against intimidation, not seeking conflict, and keeping dialogue alive on equal footing.

In an interconnected world, building bridges—not barriers—is the path to shared prosperity. What's your take? Join the conversation below.
