Labor Day Box Office Surpasses 300M Yuan as “The Dumpling Queen” Leads

As the five-day Labor Day holiday unfolds across the Chinese mainland, the film market is alive with energy and emotion.

By 2 p.m. on May 2, Beacon Pro, a leading movie analytics platform, reported that total box office revenue – from new releases to advance screenings – had already topped 300 million yuan (about US$41.25 million).

Films that turn the lens on ordinary lives are resonating most. Leading the charge is "The Dumpling Queen," which has already captured over 97 million yuan in ticket sales.

Directed by Andrew Lau and inspired by a true story, "The Dumpling Queen" follows a single mother – played by Ma Li – who moves to a new city and, through determination and skill, builds a dumpling stall into a household name. With powerful performances by Kara Wai and Zhu Yawen, the film weaves together grit, hope and the simple joy of everyday moments.

"Rather than calling it a story of a strong female lead, I'd say it's a grand ensemble," reads a top comment on Douban. "'Dumpling Queen' isn't just the heroine's own crown, but one jointly bestowed by the kindness and resilience of everyday people."

Beacon Pro now expects "The Dumpling Queen" to dominate the May Day box office, with projected earnings exceeding 300 million yuan. Many viewers say the film left them nostalgic – 'the kind of movie that makes you want to call your mom.'

With audiences hungry for real-life stories, the early box office surge offers a glimpse into China's evolving cinema landscape – where local tales of perseverance and community find a universal audience.
