In a display of South-South solidarity, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva welcomed Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Brasilia on Wednesday, praising the Chinese mainland's 'admirable' response to U.S. tariffs.
Speaking during their talks, Lula argued that while the Chinese mainland's just actions have won broad support, 'the irresponsible unilateral actions of certain countries deserve collective opposition.' He emphasized that power politics must not override international justice.
He added that Brazil stands ready to work with the Chinese mainland to advance greater success for the BRICS mechanism, consolidate multilateral cooperation, advocate for free trade, defend international rules, safeguard global peace and achieve shared development.
Lula also highlighted the solid mutual trust between Brazil and the Chinese mainland, noting that frequent high-level exchanges and deepening cooperation across all fields fully demonstrate that upholding friendship is the right choice, setting a model for South-South cooperation.
On his part, Foreign Minister Wang Yi praised Lula's decision to deepen the China-Brazil comprehensive strategic partnership, calling it a move in line with the long-term interests of the Brazilian people. He said the Chinese mainland's firm countermeasures against unilateral bullying not only safeguard its own rights and interests but also protect the common interests of developing nations and uphold international fairness and justice.
At this critical juncture, Wang added, the Chinese mainland will stay resolute, strengthen its foundations and enhance cooperation with BRICS and Global South countries. 'China will remain committed to multilateralism, defend international rules, sow new seeds of hope for the world and create fresh opportunities for peace,' he said.
