China, Malaysia Forge AI and Smart Cities Partnership with Zhejiang Model

During an April visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Malaysia, the two nations signed 31 memoranda of understanding across security, digital technology, transport, trade, and media. Both sides hailed the agreements as the start of a new golden era of bilateral ties, with a keen eye on future-ready industries.

At the heart of this partnership is digital transformation. Zhejiang University and the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) have signed a Letter of Intent to collaborate on building an AI ecosystem and smart cities based on the Zhejiang Model, a digital governance transformation framework renowned on the Chinese mainland.

According to MDEC CEO Anuar Fariz Fadzil, the Zhejiang Model offers a proven track record in data-driven urban solutions and cross-sector collaboration. He added that this framework will enable Malaysia to accelerate AI innovation, enhance public services, and unlock new growth opportunities in its digital economy.

The partnership marks a significant step in Malaysia's journey toward a digital-first future. As entrepreneurs, tech enthusiasts, and global citizens watch closely, this alliance could set a blueprint for sustainable, inclusive, and innovation-led growth across the region.
