China and Nigeria Unite Against Protectionism, Champion Multilateralism

In a show of solidarity aimed at strengthening ties across the Global South, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar on Tuesday to chart a course against rising protectionism and geopolitical bullying.

“China is willing to work with African countries, including Nigeria, as well as the vast number of developing countries, to jointly reject protectionism, oppose hegemony and bullying, and make clearly heard the voice of upholding multilateralism and defending fairness and justice,” said Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.

China extended an invitation to Nigeria to join the next BRICS meeting as a partner country, signaling Beijing’s support for Abuja to play a more influential role in international and regional affairs. For many, this marks a strategic win for Nigeria, opening doors to new economic and political partnerships.

Echoing this collaborative spirit, Tuggar affirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the one-China principle and praised China’s zero-tariff treatment for the least developed African countries with which it has diplomatic relations. He expressed hope that Beijing will continue supporting West Africa’s development.

“Nigeria is willing to work in solidarity and coordination with China to jointly safeguard multilateralism and the common interests of the Global South,” Tuggar added, highlighting a shared vision of a fairer, more inclusive world order.

As emerging economies navigate a shifting geopolitical landscape, this China-Nigeria dialogue underscores a broader trend: alliances built on shared values and collective action rather than unilateral power plays. For young global citizens, entrepreneurs, and activists alike, the message is clear—collaboration across borders remains a powerful tool against economic fragmentation and political coercion.
