Shanghai is racing ahead in the AI race with the launch of an AI ecosystem platform dubbed an "AI supermarket". Debuted in February, this one-stop hub offers developers immediate access to resources such as DeepSeek models, government-subsidized computing power and a high-quality corpus.
The initiative is spearheaded by the Shanghai Foundation Model Innovation Center, a large-model incubator that now houses over 100 enterprises. Spanning more than 60,000 square meters, it enables startups to scale quickly by tapping into 18 support policies, including computing subsidies, fundraising networks and open data platforms.
On Tuesday, President Xi Jinping visited the incubator during his inspection tour of Shanghai. He urged the city to lead AI development and governance while accelerating the creation of a scientific and technological innovation highland with global influence.
This visit came just days after China’s leadership held a dedicated AI study session, where President Xi emphasized the need to gain a head start in this strategic sector. Experts note that by streamlining AI resources in Shanghai, the platform lays groundwork for deeper collaboration with Global South partners seeking tech-driven solutions.
