In a winner-takes-all Game 5 of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) quarterfinals, the Guangsha Lions edged the Qingdao Eagles 101-96 in Hangzhou, east China’s Zhejiang Province, on Wednesday.
Despite a rough shooting night—missing 11 of his 15 field goals—star guard Barry Brown Jr. dished out nine assists. Season MVP Sun Minghui led the charge with a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double, guiding his team to victory.
Qingdao’s bench standout Yang Hansen tallied 16 points, 11 rebounds and a block in 36 minutes, while Quinndary Weatherspoon delivered 24 points and eight assists. Their late rally cut Guangsha’s lead to four in the fourth, but key offensive boards swung momentum back.
After trading leads early, Guangsha outscored Qingdao 25-19 in the second quarter and never looked back, building a cushion as big as 13 points before holding on in the final frame.
Next up: the Lions face defending champions Liaoning Flying Leopards in the semifinals, with Game 1 tipping off Saturday in Hangzhou. On the other side of the bracket, the Shanxi Loongs and Beijing Ducks open their series Sunday in Taiyuan, north China’s Shanxi Province.
