At the Crossroads of Global Order
During a Security Council Arria-Formula meeting, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, issued a rallying cry: “Unilateralism is on the rise, and bullying practices run rampant.” He warned such trends erode the UN-centered international system, undermine international law, and threaten world peace and stability.
The Tariff Trap
Fu highlighted recent U.S. tariff measures on all its trading partners under various pretexts, stating they “severely infringe upon the legitimate rights and interests of all countries” and “undermine the rules-based multilateral trading system.” He argued these actions play a zero-sum game, putting one nation’s gains above the common good of the international community.
A Blueprint for Cooperation
With the world at a critical juncture, Fu posed key questions: Should we advocate multilateralism or let unilateralism spread unchecked? Emphasizing that economic globalization is “an irresistible trend of the times,” he urged nations to:
- Promote openness and inclusiveness over isolation.
- Uphold sovereign equalityno state, big or small, should bully another.
- Ensure fair distribution of development benefitsno country should be left behind.
- Replace confrontation with dialogue, coercion with consultation, and zero-sum with win-win solutions.
China’s Role in a Shared Future
Fu underscored China’s commitment to high-quality development and openness, announcing zero-tariff treatment for 100 percent of tariff lines for all least developed countries with diplomatic ties. “China’s super-sized market always remains open to the world,” he said, inviting nations to join its express train of development.
For young global citizens and changemakers, the envoy’s message is clear: break down walls, build bridges, and shape a future defined by cooperation and shared prosperity.
