Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said he hopes the new Austrian government will continue its friendly policy toward China and help tackle global challenges together, after a phone call with Austria’s Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger on Tuesday.
Recognition of a changing international landscape took center stage, with Meinl-Reisinger reaffirming Austria’s commitment to the one-China policy and eagerness to deepen bilateral and EU-China ties.
Wang also seized the moment to defend the multilateral trading system, blasting the United States’ tariffs as "a typical act of unilateralism, protectionism and economic bullying" that disrupt international trade and the global economic order.
"As a responsible country, China will continue to uphold the international system with the United Nations at its core, safeguard the international order based on international law, and commit to high-level opening up while sharing development opportunities with the world," he said.
Calling China and the European Union two "major pillars and vast markets" of the global economy, Wang urged both sides to join forces to defend multilateral trade and build an open world economy.
Meinl-Reisinger welcomed the idea, saying the EU stands united in safeguarding its interests and looks forward to enhancing economic and trade cooperation with China while addressing global challenges.
In an era of economic headwinds and shifting alliances, stronger China-Austria and EU-China partnerships may prove key to sustaining a stable, open global economy that benefits young professionals, entrepreneurs, and changemakers worldwide.
