On the shores of Putian, Fujian province in the Chinese mainland, over 10,000 residents and global admirers gathered to honor the 1065th birthday of Mazu, the folk goddess of the sea. Delegations from Mazu temples around the world joined locals in a vibrant sacrificial ceremony, highlighting a tradition cherished across continents.

The event unfolded amid glowing lanterns and centuries-old temple architecture, as incense smoke curled into the sky and worshippers presented ritual offerings. Rhythmic drumming and solemn chants underscored the community’s deep connection to maritime customs and cultural heritage.

Since its inscription on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009, belief in Mazu has continued to unite people from diverse backgrounds.
