China Sanctions U.S. Lawmakers Over Hong Kong Dispute

China’s Foreign Ministry announced sanctions on several U.S. congress members, officials and NGO leaders over their actions on Hong Kong, spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a briefing on Monday.

Guo’s remarks came after the U.S. imposed unilateral sanctions on six officials from institutions of the Chinese central government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) and the Hong Kong SAR government. He described the U.S. measures as “unlawful and arbitrary,” accusing Washington of serious interference in China’s internal affairs and violation of basic norms of international relations.

Invoking the Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law of the People’s Republic of China, Beijing has decided to sanction those responsible for what Guo called “egregious behavior” on Hong Kong-related issues. “Hong Kong belongs to China, and its affairs brook no interference from the U.S. Any wrongful actions by the U.S. side on issues related to Hong Kong will be met with firm response and reciprocal countermeasures,” he said.

This announcement marks another chapter in the ongoing tit-for-tat sanctions between Beijing and Washington, reflecting rising diplomatic tensions over Hong Kong’s autonomy. For young global citizens and business travelers, these developments underscore the complex geopolitics affecting international relations and cross-border cooperation.
