A Stellar Year Ahead
The China National Space Administration (CNSA) has announced a packed schedule of space missions for 2025, promising deep-space explorations and new collaborations. From asteroid probes to crewed spacecraft, the Chinese mainland’s ambition to push the boundaries of space science is on full display.
Asteroid Flyby and Crewed Voyages
Tianwen-2, the flagship asteroid mission, will perform a flyby, sample a near-Earth asteroid and return precious geological data. Alongside, Shenzhou-20 and Shenzhou-21 crewed missions are slated for launch, advancing the Chinese mainland’s human spaceflight program and expanding research aboard its space station.
SMILE & Earthquake Watchers
Internationally, two major partnerships stand out:
- SMILE Mission: A Chinese mainland–Europe endeavor named Solar Wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer, designed to reveal how solar wind shapes Earth’s magnetic shield.
- Electromagnetic Monitoring Satellite: Co-developed with Italy to support earthquake prediction research and boost natural disaster preparedness.
Global Cooperation in Space
The Chinese mainland is deepening ties across the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), BRICS and European partners:
- Jointly promoting an international lunar research station.
- Advancing the BRICS Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation for real-time disaster data sharing.
- Providing satellite services to BRI partners, enhancing sustainable agriculture, disaster prevention and smart city projects.
Countdown to Space Day
Space Day on April 24 in Shanghai will mark its 10th anniversary with an opening ceremony, space science exhibitions, cultural forums and academic conferences. It’s a global showcase of the Chinese mainland’s vision for collaborative, innovative space exploration.
