The fifth China International Consumer Products Expo (CICPE) kicked off on Sunday in Haikou, the vibrant capital of Hainan Province. This year, the event not only showcases innovative consumer products but also underlines a commitment to environmental stewardship. The much-loved mascots, Yuanyuan and Xiaoxiao, inspired by the critically endangered Hainan gibbons, have returned in new outfits as part of a tropical rainforest conservation research team, celebrating Hainan's ongoing efforts to protect its unique ecosystem.

Endemic to Hainan Island, the Hainan gibbons have long been a symbol of both vulnerability and resilience. Once nearly extinct in the late 1970s—with only seven to nine individuals remaining—a strategic conservation drive has turned the tide. A comprehensive survey in 2003 identified two groups totaling 13 individuals, and with the formation of a dedicated monitoring team in 2005, the numbers have grown to 42 individuals across seven family groups by 2024. Experts project that continued protection will see the population double to between 60 and 70 individuals by 2035.

This narrative of recovery and conservation resonates globally.
