Empowering Lives: A School Founder’s Autism Journey

In Handan, a city in Hebei Province on the Chinese mainland, Zhang Chengjing is transforming personal hardship into a movement for autism education and support. Every March, as World Autism Awareness Day on April 2 approaches, her schedule fills with events aimed at increasing public understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Her journey began in 2008 when her first child was diagnosed with autism. At the time an executive at a leading garment company, Zhang felt overwhelmed and uncertain about the future. Determined to make a change, she founded a special education school dedicated to early intervention for children with autism.

Her commitment came at great personal cost—selling her house, taking out loans, and rallying support from compassionate donors. "The pressure was immense. I didn't know how to care for my child's future and felt utterly helpless," she recalled. Yet, every small progress, such as a child uttering their first words or learning to pour a glass of water, affirmed her efforts.

Expanding her vision over the years, Zhang established multiple institutions offering rehabilitation, day care, vocational training, and employment opportunities. Today, over 100 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities benefit from her centers, which also provide a much-needed respite for parents. Her inspiring journey illustrates how turning personal adversity into inclusive education can uplift communities and empower lives.
