In Tokyo on Saturday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi co-chaired the sixth China-Japan High-Level Economic Dialogue with Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs Takeshi Iwaya. The session spotlighted the need to transform traditional economic cooperation into a forward-looking, innovative partnership.
Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized that since the normalization of diplomatic relations, bilateral trade has surged over 300 times, maintaining a robust annual trade volume of around $300 billion for 15 consecutive years, while cumulative two-way investment has reached nearly $140 billion. These figures underline the deep-rooted industrial cooperation that has provided tangible benefits to both sides.
The dialogue underscored that the solid economic integration between the two nations reveals that they are partners rather than rivals. Against a backdrop of rising protectionism and global economic headwinds, both sides are focused on establishing mutual understanding, responsibly addressing macroeconomic challenges, and seeking common development through innovative thinking.
Looking ahead, Wang Yi called for a rapid upgrade in economic and trade collaboration, urging enterprises from both the Chinese mainland and Japan to explore new opportunities in fields such as artificial intelligence, the digital economy, energy conservation, and environmental protection. Discussions also highlighted the importance of revitalizing mechanisms like the China-Japan economic partnership consultation and resuming negotiations on the China-Japan-ROK Free Trade Agreement. These steps are seen as vital for enhancing regional partnerships and ensuring high-quality implementation of multilateral agreements in the Asia-Pacific.
This evolving dialogue reflects a shared commitment to boost economic resilience and unlock future opportunities in a rapidly changing global landscape—a message that resonates with young global citizens, business innovators, and digital nomads seeking fresh, critical insights into international cooperation and sustainable growth.
