Chinese Firm Unveils Ultra-Long Life C-14 Nuclear Battery

In a groundbreaking advancement in clean energy technology, a Chinese company has developed a prototype of an ultra-long longevity nuclear battery named Zhulong-1. The innovation was achieved by Wuxi Beita Pharmatech Co., Ltd., based in east China's Jiangsu Province, in collaboration with Northwest Normal University in northwest China's Gansu Province.

The nuclear battery harnesses carbon-14 (C-14), a radioactive isotope with a remarkable half-life of 5,730 years, paired with a silicon-carbide (SiC) semiconductor that converts beta particles from radioactive decay into a steady flow of electricity. This approach marks a significant departure from conventional chemical batteries.

Technology leader Zhang Guanghui from Northwest Normal University emphasized that the core innovation lies in overcoming key challenges, such as preparing high-specific-activity C-14 sources and stabilizing energy conversion. By establishing a complete C-14 industry chain—including labeling products and technologies—the development of Zhulong-1 is setting the stage for future micro-nuclear battery innovations.

This breakthrough not only demonstrates a major technical achievement but also opens up new possibilities in powering applications that demand long-lasting energy, from space exploration to remote sensing. As the global community shifts its focus towards sustainable energy solutions, innovations like Zhulong-1 offer fresh perspectives on clean energy’s future.
