Hefei, the capital of East China's Anhui Province, has officially become the 18th city in China to surpass the 10 million permanent residents mark, according to the 2024 Annual Population Sample Survey released on Monday.
The survey reveals that Anhui's total permanent population reached 61.23 million by the end of 2024, marking a modest increase of 20,000 people (a 0.03 percent growth rate) from the previous year. Among Anhui's 16 cities, Hefei stands out with a population of 10.002 million and an impressive urbanization rate of 86.38 percent.
Joining Hefei in the elite group of cities with over 10 million residents are Chongqing, Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Tianjin, Xi'an, Suzhou, Zhengzhou, Hangzhou, Shijiazhuang, Linyi, Dongguan, Changsha, and Qingdao. Notably, 15 of these 17 cities boast a GDP exceeding one trillion yuan, underscoring the trend that larger populations often coincide with significant economic hubs.
Within the Yangtze River Delta region, cities like Wenzhou, Ningbo, Nanjing, and Xuzhou, each with populations exceeding 9 million, are poised to join the ranks of 10-million-strong cities in the near future. This growth highlights the dynamic urban expansion and economic development occurring across China's key regions.
