China’s Top Universities Expand AI Enrollment to Boost National Innovation

In a strategic move to align with national priorities and advance cutting-edge technologies, several of China's leading universities have announced plans to significantly increase their undergraduate enrollment for 2025.

Tsinghua University and Peking University are each set to add approximately 150 new undergraduate spots. Tsinghua will establish a new general education college dedicated to cultivating interdisciplinary talent in artificial intelligence (AI), while Peking University will focus its expanded intake on fields critical to national strategic needs, fundamental disciplines, and emerging frontiers.

Expanding beyond these institutions, Renmin University plans to add over 100 places in areas such as AI. Additionally, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Wuhan University are increasing their offerings in AI, renewable energy, and integrated circuits to better meet the country's strategic demands.

The 2025 government work report underscores the importance of the "AI Plus" initiative, which aims to seamlessly integrate digital technology with manufacturing and market strengths. This initiative promotes the extensive application of large language models and the development of next-generation intelligent products.

Complementing these educational expansions, China unveiled its first national action plan in January to build a "strong education nation" by 2035. This plan is designed to coordinate educational development, enhance innovation efficiency, and contribute to the construction of a strong, technologically advanced country.
