China’s Life Expectancy Soars to 79 Years in 2024

China has achieved a significant milestone in public health, with the average life expectancy reaching 79 years in 2024. This marks a 0.4-year increase from the previous year and surpasses the targets set in the nation's 14th Five-Year Plan ahead of schedule.

Lei Haichao, head of the National Health Commission, highlighted at a press conference that this accomplishment is particularly noteworthy when compared to global standards. In many countries and regions where the average life expectancy exceeds 75 years, the annual increase typically ranges between 0.1 to 0.2 years.

Data from 53 middle- and high-income countries places China fourth in life expectancy, and within the G20 nations, the 79-year average ranks China tenth. These impressive figures can be attributed to the Chinese people's adherence to excellent traditional culture, a commitment to a healthy lifestyle, and the successful implementation of strategies like the Healthy China initiative.

"Prioritizing health development has had a direct impact on improving public health," Lei concluded, emphasizing the importance of continuous efforts in sustaining and enhancing the nation's well-being.
