Wang Xinyu Advances to Career-Best Third Round at Indian Wells

Wang Xinyu of China made a significant stride in the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, by defeating former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 6-4, 6-4 in the women's singles second round. This victory propels Wang to the third round, matching her career-best performance at the tournament.

In their previous encounter, Ostapenko dominated, conceding no more than five games in total. However, this time the dynamics shifted as Ostapenko began the first set with a 2-10 lead but soon made critical mistakes, allowing Wang to mount a comeback. Notably, Ostapenko squandered a 40-15 advantage in the seventh game, leading to five consecutive lost points and a crucial break. Wang secured the first set 6-4, taking a 1-0 lead in the match.

Wang continued her impressive form into the second set, starting with a 2-0 advantage. Despite Ostapenko smashing her racket in frustration and stabilizing her game, Wang faced a 40-15 deficit in the eighth game. Demonstrating resilience, Wang held her serve with two aces and clinched the set 6-4, ultimately winning the match.

Next, Wang Xinyu is set to face the No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula of the United States, promising an exciting continuation of her tournament run.
