A recent survey conducted by CGTN and Renmin University of China reveals that young people in China and the United States prioritize mutual respect and benefit in their views on bilateral relations. As the world’s largest developing and developed nations, both countries’ youth recognize the importance of peaceful coexistence.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi highlighted the necessity of peaceful coexistence during the ongoing Two Sessions in Beijing, emphasizing that both nations must work together for long-term harmony.
The CGTN poll, which surveyed 4,003 individuals aged 18 to 45 across 16 major Chinese cities and all 50 U.S. states, found that 87.3% of Chinese respondents and 78.5% of American participants believe that mutual benefit is the foundation for resolving economic and trade issues between the two countries.
When evaluating the nature of China-U.S. economic and trade relations, 66.4% of Chinese respondents described it as a balance of cooperation and competition, while 43.1% of Americans shared a similar view. Both groups show a strong preference for addressing structural problems through dialogue and proper channels, with 98.2% of Chinese and 92.6% of Americans agreeing that both nations have the potential to be partners in achieving mutual success and common prosperity.
The poll also shed light on perceptions of competitive advantages. Chinese youth perceive the United States as leading in biotechnology (68.9%), artificial intelligence (43%), and space exploration (38.7%). Conversely, American respondents view China as excelling in manufacturing technology (52.9%), consumer electronics (44.9%), and artificial intelligence (43%).
Looking ahead, Chinese youth are eager to deepen cooperation in artificial intelligence (54%), e-commerce (41.5%), and healthcare (38.1%), while their American counterparts prioritize manufacturing (53%), clean energy (36.4%), and environmental protection (33.2%).
Enhancing cultural and interpersonal exchanges is also a key priority. Approximately 77% of Chinese and 81% of American respondents believe that young people from both nations share common values and interests. Additionally, 80% of Americans and nearly 80% of Chinese participants agree that popular culture effectively fosters mutual understanding.
American youths show a keen interest in Chinese social platforms (41.1%), animation (34.4%), video games (27%), movies and TV series (25.2%), and fashion trends (23.4%). Meanwhile, Chinese respondents hope to enhance mutual understanding through joint research projects (49.4%), strengthening social media interaction (47.9%), and organizing student exchange programs (43.4%). American youths are particularly interested in joint research projects (39.9%), cultural exchanges (39.7%), and language learning (37.7%).
These findings underscore the strong desire among young people in both countries to build a cooperative and mutually beneficial relationship, emphasizing dialogue, shared interests, and cultural exchanges as the pathways to achieving common prosperity.
